Second Annual Adult Prom benefits cause
It is always great to see a group of people coming together to enjoy themselves, but it means even more to see people enjoy themselves while benefiting a good cause. That will be the goal this year when the A. W. Todd Center plays host to the Second Annual Adult Prom Nov. 16.
Last year, all proceeds from the event went to the American Cancer Society. This year, a portion of proceeds will also go to Britnee Phillips, who is fighting cancer.
“I was looking at how the world was and how there was so much chaos,” said event organizer Tammy West. “I’m always a person of unity, so I thought, if I can get every race together and just get them all together to leave all of the negative energy at home and just come and enjoy themselves, that would be a really good thing – and then I thought, why not put this toward a good cause?”
The event will begin at 7 p.m., when guests can walk the red carpet and have their pictures taken.
West said last year about 200 people came out to the event, but this year she plans on even bigger and better things, with hopes of reaching the 300-person capacity for the Todd Center.
The event is open to anyone over the age of 21. No alcoholic beverages are allowed, but guests will have a hearty spread of treats like punch and chips to hot wings and a fruit display.
A DJ will provide tunes for the evening, and guests will have the opportunity to win door prizes. In between breaks after door prizes are given out, West said there will also be information on regular check-ups and things people should be doing to ensure they are keeping track of their health.
“I think we don’t take enough time to actually be aware of ourselves,” West said.
This year’s theme will be “Get your back up off the wall” to encourage people to forget their problems and spend the night celebrating life.
“Let’s not just sit down and dwell on old things,” West said. “Dance it off.”
One couple will be named this year’s prom king and queen. There will also be a best-dressed couple and best-dressed expecting mother.
West said she hopes the night will be something different to encourage people to have a nice night out together and enjoy life.
