Walk-off homer dashes Belgreen’s hopes

Sumiton Christian scored three times in the bottom of the seventh, including a walk-off homerun, to eliminate Belgreen in the Class 2A regional in Florence. (2025-2).

Bryn Scott reached base three times and had two RBIs for Belgreen.

Prior to the 7-6 loss to Sumiton, Belgreen met county rival Tharptown in the losers bracket of the Class 2A regional.

The Bulldogs found themselves in the do-ordie- situation after losing to Lexington 9-6 after shutting out Winston County 11-0.

Tharptown’s path to the matchup was losing to Lamar County 9-3, then beating Sulligent 6-5.

When the county rivals finally faced each other, the bats got hot for both sides. Belgreen collected 15 hits, while Tharptown had 12 hits.

Belgreen opened the scoring in the top of the first inning thanks to two singles. The Bulldogs got on the board first when Kendra Williams singled in a run.

Belgreen scored five runs on two hits in the top of the third. Zoey Blaxton singled, scoring two runs; Marlie Terry singled, scoring one run; and an error scored two runs.

Tharptown took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gabi Johnson doubled, scoring two runs, to give the Wildcats a 9-8 lead.

Jemma Moore homered to left field helping Belgreen tie the game at nine in the top of the seventh.

Belgreen gained a decisive advantage in extra innings scoring five runs on six hits to take a 14-9 lead in the eighth inning. The biggest blow came on a single by Moore that drove in two runs.

Blaxton earned the win for Belgreen allowing 10 hits and six runs over six and a third innings, striking out three and walking one. Alyssa Fischer took the loss for Tharptown.

For Belgreen, Blaxton, Shaylyn Bryant, Mackinley Hogan, Caleigh Lawson, Moore and Terry each had two hits. Blaxton and Moore drove in three runs each.

For Tharptown, Johnson had four RBIs going 2-for-5 in the game. Natalee Franks led the Wildcats with three hits in four at bats. Fischer and Lexi Little each had multiple hits for Tharptown.
