Georgette Jones to perform at Gathering in Red Bay
Georgette will perform at 7 p.m. both nights. Admission is $25 per person and may be paid at Scotty Kennedy Photography in Red Bay or by mailing a check or money order to Scotty Kennedy, 400 4th ST SW, Red Bay, AL 35582. Checks should be made payable to Red Bay Museum.
Georgette, who has been referred to as “The Princess of Country Music” will be singing some songs in tribute to her mother Wynette, “The First Lady of Country Music,” as well as songs she has written herself.
All four of Wynette’s daughters will be in Red Bay during the weekend.
Georgette last performed in Red Bay at its Centennial Celebration in 2007.
Wynette herself performed five benefit concerts for Red Bay High School. She was born Virginia Wynette Pugh in the Bounds Crossroads community between Tremont, Miss., and Red Bay and was raised and schooled in Mississippi at Hopewell School at Bounds Crossroads. She later attended Tremont High School. She herself would say Red Bay was her hometown, which was the closest town she lived to, where she would shop, go to the movies and the doctor and visit relatives.
As part of The Gathering weekend, the Red Bay Museum will be open June 9-10 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. Admission will be free; donations will be accepted. The tour includes an extensive display on Wynette, with many items donated by fans, friends and family members, including gowns worn on stage, the complete vinyl album collection, awards and much more. Items related to Wynette on sale at the museum include an ornament featuring Wynette with the Tammy Wynette Highway sign; her biography Tragic Country Queen; pictures of her made by photographer Scotty Kennedy; and extra vinyl albums (a new selection in mint condition with cellophane). All proceeds go the upkeep of the museum.
At this time, this is the largest collection on display related to Wynette.
The museum also contains recreations of different Red Bay landmarks, like the original Hotel Red Bay lobby, soda fountain, first bank teller windows, theater, church, school, depot and many other displays related to Red Bay. Visitors from all across the country have commented that the Red Bay Museum is one of the best museums they have ever visited for a town its size.
The museum is a project of the Red Bay Civitan Club, which sponsored the last three benefit concerts Wynette put on for Red Bay School.
Also open June 9 and every Friday is the Civitan Depot, Red Bay’s thrift store, located right next to the museum. All donated merchandise has been carefully selected to sell only items in the best condition, with the proceeds also going to the museum.
