Teen wrecks car while fleeing from police

A Russellville man was injured in a one-car accident after attempting to elude police late Thursday.

Officials with the Tri-Cities Alabama State Troopers Post said Leonardo Lucas-Castaneda, 18, Franklin 144, Russellville, was injured and air-lifted to Huntsville Hospital just before 10 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities said the accident happened on U.S. 43, just south of Cedar Creek Bridge between Russellville and Phil Campbell.

Authorities with the Russellville Police Department said Castaneda had committed several traffic violations and once officers tried to make the traffic stop, Castaneda took off South on U.S. 43 and ended up flipping his 1988 Pontiac after losing control.

Huntsville Hospital officials said that as of Friday afternoon, Castaneda is in the surgical ICU listed in good condition.

Investigators with the Russellville Police Department said once Castaneda is released from the hospital, warrants will be served and he will be charged with attempting to elude law enforcement, running a stop sign, running a red light and speeding.
