County board grateful for sales tax passage
Franklin County school officials expressed great gratitude during their school board meeting Tuesday evening for everyone who voted for the one-cent sales tax.
Superintendent Gary Williams said he guarantees the money received through the sales tax is extremely needed and will definitely be put to good use.
The final tally for the tax during the June 1 primaries showed 4,244 votes for the tax and 3,649 votes against the tax.
The tax, which people who shop in Franklin County have been paying since it was implemented in January, will continue to be implemented for two years until the vote comes around again in 2012.
In other business, several personnel changes were made throughout the Franklin County school system:
• East Franklin Junior High School Principal Gary Harris retired effective July 1
• Franklin County Career Tech Center school janitor Pat Forrester resigned effective June 30
• Belgreen School nurse Andrea Sornberger retracts ten-month contract to nine-month contract.
• Tamla Whitten from the temporary licensed practical nurse to fill in for the extended leave of absence of Wensalee Baker.
• Belgreen High School fifth and sixth grade English, reading, writing, spelling teacher Kay Taylor will transfer to Social Studies teacher at BHS.
• Half-a-day teacher for English at Tharptown and East Franklin Michelle Watts will transfer to full-time English teacher at THS
• Librarian Sissy Moore will be transferring from Phil Campbell Elementary to Phil Campbell High School.
• Linda Lindsey will be transferring from math teacher at Tharptown High School to math teacher at Phil Campbell High School.
• Cynthia Forsythe will be transferring from full-time Program Coordinator at the Central Office to part-time assistant principal at Tharptown High School, which is a temporary position.
• Shelana Luck will be transferring from secretary at Phil Campbell High School to school bookkeeper at PCHS.
• Amy Scott will be transferring from teacher aide at East Franklin Junior High to elementary teacher at Tharptown Elementary.
• Tara Vincent has been hired as a new elementary teacher at Tharptown Elementary.
• Joslyn Garrison has been hired as a new English, part-time librarian at Tharptown High.
• Scott Wiginton has been hired as a contract principal (24 months) at East Franklin Junior High
• Danny Wooten has been hired for the janitorial position at Franklin County Career Tech Center.
• New Red Bay teacher aides include Lauren M. Williams, Gretchen Fancher and Candice Funderburk
The next regularly scheduled meeting for the Franklin County Board of Education will be held on Thursday, July 29 at 5:15 p.m.
