Red Bay tennis falls in sectionals

Red Bay’s run of eight consecutive trips to the state tournament ended this week as the girls team lost all first-round singles and doubles matches.

In No.-1 singles, Morgan McKinney lost to Sheffield 6-0,6-1 while Jade Ezzell lost in No.-2 singles to Lauderdale County 6-1, 6-0.

Gretchen Fancher lost her No.-3 singles match to Lauderdale County 6-0, 6-0 and Candice Funderburk lost her No.-4 singles match against Covenant Christian 6-0, 6-0.

Taylor Webb lost her No.-5 singles match to Lauderdale County 6-0, 6-0 while Danielle Hastings lost the No.-6 singles match to Lauderdale County 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles action McKinney and Ezzell lost to Lauderdale County 6-0, 6-0 while Fancher and Meghann Oliver lost to Lauderdale County 6-0, 6-0. Hastings and Celia Ozbirn lost in No.-3 doubles to Shoals Christian 6-0, 6-0.

“We have had some good players come through Red Bay the last few years,” Red Bay coach Sonny Glasgow said. “This year we were starting over and we will need to work in the summer to be able to compete next year. We will have five out of the top six girls back for next year.”
