Arrowhead has facelift for 2002

By By Marty Stamper
August 2, 2002
One of my annual golfing stops of area courses includes Arrowhead Golf Course, which is located two miles off Hwy 19 between Collinsville and House, just in the edge of Neshoba County.
This year's venture found several holes changed from the 2001 layout. No. 1 has been changed from a short par-3 to a very tricky 405-yard, par-4.
No. 2 is no longer a straight par-3. It's now a dog-leg right par-4. A good high shot off the tee can reach the green in one, however, especially when playing partner golf.
Nos. 3, 4, and 5 remain the same, but while No. 6 is the same, the hole has an entirely different layout when played as No. 15. No. 15 is a 100-yard par-3 to an island green.
Nos. 7 and 8 are the same and No. 9 is like it was a year ago, but not like when the original green was shaped like an arrowhead in 1997. It was an interesting design, but one that proved hard to maintain.
No. 18 is a 160-yard, par-3 over water. Mercifully, a bank is behind the green although it can be flown if one isn't careful. Playing the shot off the bank is okay. Playing it off the carthouse is another story.
The course, owned and operated by Max Alawine, measures 4,101 yards and is a par-65. It's a real good test of one's iron game.
Who's your daddy?
Joel Nelson rallied for a 5-under par 67 on the second round to beat brother Steve Nelson by a stroke for the 2002 Newton Country Club men's championship last weekend.
Joel finished with a 138 on the 6,578-yard, par-72 course, while Steve had a 139. Steve led by three strokes after the first round with a 67.
Their father, Creeper Nelson, finished in sixth place with a 150.
Tying for third at 144 were Jim Humphreys and Jay Powell, while Brent McMillan's 146 was good for fifth place.
Making the NCC Ryder Cup team for its eighth-annual match with Decatur Country Club on Aug. 24-25 are all three Nelsons, Humphreys, Powell, McMillan, Tommy Harthcock, Jr.; Leon Harris, Tommy Harthcock III, David Burt, Jeff Bounds, and Lake Thoms.
Canebrake gets clubhouse
Canebrake Golf Club at Hattiesburg will soon have a clubhouse to match its course. The clubhouse will sit on 12,000 square feet of floor space at the club's entrance.
Canebrake is rated third in the state by Golf Digest.
The two-story building will feature a locker room/lounge area for men and women, a grand dining room with a picture window overlooking the lake on No. 18, courtyard dining, meeting room, and a tower observatory.
