LOVE's Kitchen cooks up food art

LOVE's Kitchen volunteers plan a food-themed benefit art show this month to raise money for construction of the organization's new building.
Artists of all ages can participate in the show by submitting artwork in any medium. Some of the works will be auctioned, with money raised going to LOVE's Kitchen.
LOVE's Kitchen, formally known as the Lauderdale Outreach and Volunteer Effort, operates behind St. Joseph's Catholic Church. It provides breakfast and lunch for homeless and needy people.
The organization plans to move into a new building on the east side of 18th Avenue near Sowashee Creek. Irwin and others said the new building will allow greater outreach and more efficiency. They said it also will be more accessible to those in need.
Artists must submit their work for the show by Sept. 15. Children can turn theirs into their school office; adults can leave their entries at Cartmell Gallery.
Irwin said the benefit is tentatively set for Sept. 20. Sponsors are still looking for a location.
LOVE's Kitchen has been successful through the years, Irwin said, adding that it originally served about 275 people per day and has now grown to serving about 420 people per day.
Jennie Gaither, a volunteer at LOVE's Kitchen, hopes the entire community will get involved in the benefit.
Gaither added that LOVE's Kitchen is supplying a need to the community.
