Relief committee to visit county

The Long Term Recovery Committee of Northwest Alabama, which is a subgroup of the Northwest Alabama Volunteer Organization Active in Disaster (VOAD), has requested the assistance of the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC), better known as the “green shirts,” to assess the long-term recovery needs for the communities in Franklin and Marion counties devastated by the April 27 tornado.

The CRWRC has been assisting communities with disasters for over 50 years and this is the first step in working with families to identify long-term needs.

The CRWRC will be in the Franklin County area Wednesday, Aug. 31, through Saturday, Sept. 3, and Monday, Sept. 5 through Friday, Sept. 9. The team will be going door-to-door to existing homes between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. The walk-in center at the Christian Aid Ministries/United Way at 6561 U.S. 43 in Spruce Pine will also be staffed with volunteers from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. Appointments can be made by calling 256-349-8903.

These volunteers are specially trained in assessing damage, assisting with federal relief forms and dealing with psychological after effects from loss.

This service is free and can be verified by your local police and fire departments.
