March 5, 2011
Nancy Renee Cummings, 51, Tucker, Ga., was granted her angel wings on March 5, 2011, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Born in Florence on July 24, 1959, to Ruby Nell (Peake) and Lawrence Cummings, Jr., she spent her early years in Tuscumbia, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville. Renee graduated from Alabama A&M University, spent summers as an intern with the US Forestry Service and upon graduation was employed by the US Forest Service.
For the past 24 years, she was employed by the US Treasury Dept., Internal Revenue Service where she served in several positions, from clerk to supervisor. Upon her retirement in April 2010, she was feted to a celebration with many friends and coworkers who expressed the kindest praises for her as a friend and supervisor. Renee received the Albert Gallatin Award, the United States Department of the Treasury’s highest career service award for her superior service.
She was proud to have earned this honor. When asked how she came to receive this honor, she said she always treated the members of her team with respect and as professionals, as she would want to be treated. She truly lived the golden rule.
Renee was compassionate about helping others and was quick to action when it came to assisting anyone in need. She rushed to the assistance of several which resulted in saving their lives.
Renee was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend, she colored our world. She enjoyed traveling, reading and girl trips with her mom and sisters. There is a tremendous void in our lives.
She will live in our hearts forever.
Renee is preceded in death by her father, Lawrence Cummings, Jr., her grandparents, Ruby (Wood) and Freeman A. Peake, of Phil Campbell, and Melba (Bentley) and Lawrence M. Cummings, Sr. of Spruce Pine.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories, her mother Ruby Nell (Peake) Nicholson of Scottsboro, sisters, Sharon Wells Johnson and husband, Larry, of Huntsville, Julie Sands and husband, Randy, of Atlanta, Ga., and Kyoko Sears and husband, Tim, of Huntsville, esteemed aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service. A family and friends graveside service will be held on March 20, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Phil Campbell City Cemetery where her father, grandparents and great grandparents are interred.
