Delta Kappa Gamma learns gardening tips

Our April meeting of Delta Kappa Gamma at Calvary Baptist Church in Russellville featured a lively and practical program by Trace Barnett, a native of Brilliant who is known for his work in food, entertaining and design.

Barnett, who holds a degree in food and nutrition from the University of Alabama, shared ideas from his work as an event planner, blogger and cooking instructor.

He spoke about making cooking, entertaining, and gardening feel manageable instead of overwhelming.

Drawing on his years in East Hampton, New York, and now on a small farm north of Birmingham, Barnett offered a variety of spring gardening tips.

Among them, he encouraged members to move greenhouse plants outside now and to use baskets for transplanting. He also suggested using umbrellas to protect plants during hail or flooding. Barnett recommended cleaning scissors with alcohol before trimming plants and reusing plastic containers in the garden.

His program blended practical advice with humor, and members clearly enjoyed both.

Dianne Pace, Debbie Nale, Sandy Gibson, Kim Burney, Beth Gilmer and Susan DeArmann served as hostesses for the meeting. They decorated with an Easter theme featuring spring flowers, rabbits, candy eggs and crosses, and they served refreshments.

Donaldson also reported on DKG Leadership Day in Montgomery. She said Alabama leaders discussed possible chapter redistricting because of declining membership and fewer chapters statewide.

Donaldson also shared information about the 2026 DKG International Convention in Colorado.

She encouraged members to review proposed bylaws revisions that will be discussed and voted on at the convention.

Gayle McAlister, chairman of the Nomination Committee, reported that Alpha Upsilon Chapter officers will remain the same for 2026-28.

Members approved Donaldson as president, Donna Bolton as vice president, Debbie Beason as secretary, Debbie Nale as treasurer, and Cheri McCain as parliamentary adviser.

Nale also reported that Alpha Upsilon donated $503 to the DKG World Fellowship Scholarship. Our May meeting will be held at North Highland Church of Christ. The DKG District I meeting will be May 11 at Leighton Baptist Church.
