Attacker shot, killed after attacking officer

RUSSELLVILLE — The AlabamaLawEnforcement Agency (ALEA) is investigating a fatal officerinvolved shooting which took place Friday night in Mills Trailer Park, while police are investigating another shooting around the same time.

Police were called to the trailer park after there were reports of a DoorDash delivery driver being assaulted by a man with a knife.

When officers arrived, the man with the knife turned his attention to one of the police officers, who attempted to stop the attack.

The officer received injuries from the attack and shot the man.

Franklin County Coroner Charlie Adcox said the 28-year-old man shot by the police officer passed away at 9:07 p.m. Friday in the Russellville Medical Center emergency department.

The officer was also transported to Russellville Medical Center for treatment and was later released, according to Police Chief Chris Hargett.

“We are thankful that [the officer] is recovering and commend his courage and selfless actions,” Hargett said. “His quick and decisive response likely prevented further serious injury or loss of life.”

In accordance with standard procedure, ALEA is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting, Hargett said.

While police were working the knife attack in Mills Trailer Park, they were called to a shooting incident on the 500 block of Carroll Avenue Southeast involving two men.

One man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital.

“There is no threat to the community regarding either event,” Hargett said. “We ask that you keep our injured officer, the victim of the stabbing, those involved in the second incident, their families and all first responders in your thoughts and prayers.”
