Man, 23, faces charge of attempted murder
RUSSELLVILLE — A 23-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge following a Friday night shooting on the 500 block of Carroll Avenue Southeast.
Police responded around 8:30 p.m. Friday to a report of the shooting.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found a 62-year-old man had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, Police Chief Chris Hargett said.
The 62-year-old was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital for treatment and released on Saturday, Hargett said.
After collecting evidence and conducting interviews, police executed a search warrant and arrested and charged Nyjel Betts with attempted murder.
Additional charges are possible, Hargett said.
“We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our community as we work to thoroughly investigate this case,” Hargett said.
The case remains under investigation.
Betts was previously arrested and charged with shooting into an occupied building and second-degree assault on Feb. 8, according to court records. He allegedly shot into a residence on the 300 block of Franklin Street using a .45 caliber handgun.
One of the gunshots struck a man in the foot inside the residence, according to court records.
In that previous charge, Betts was booked into the Franklin County Detention Facility and was released Feb. 10 on a $40,000 bond, according to court records.
