Kenneth Rae Cain, 87, of Phil Campbell, Ala., went home to be with Jesus, his Lord on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010. Kenneth was a native of Belmont, Miss. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Phil Campbell where he served as a deacon and was involved in the homebound ministry for many years. He had also been a longtime member of the church choir and Sunday school teacher.
Kenneth proudly served his country in the Armed Forces during World War II in the South Pacific. He was stationed in Hawaii after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He also played basketball on an exhibition military basketball team providing entertainment for the troops.
Kenneth graduated from Murray State University in Kentucky where he attended school on a basketball scholarship, playing for four years and earning his Bachelor’s degree in Education. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in School Administration at Mississippi State University.
Kenneth coached and taught school in Mississippi before moving to Red Bay, Ala., where he coached successful high school athletic teams. Later, he coached at Belgreen High School and Phillips High School at Bear Creek. During his coaching career, Kenneth carried several teams to the State Tournament.
After many enjoyable years as a coach, Kenneth continued his career in education as a high school principal. He served as principal at Phil Campbell High School, Mount Hope High School, Phillips High School, and Belgreen High School.
Kenneth was an avid quail hunter and outdoorsman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Jones Cain; his parents, Largus and Leona Mann Cain; his sisters, Cleo Enlow, Stella Bernal, and Ona Cain; his brothers, Orville Travis, and Howard Cain.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Barbara Taylor Cain; children, Mark Cain, Steve Cain, and Leah Cain; step-daughter, Karen Moore Townsend; grandchildren, Scott Cain, Mandy Cain, Leah Cain, Candi Cain, Melissa Cansler, Jammie Hutcheson and her husband, Matt; great-grandchildren, Maddie Harvel, Hunter Hutcheson, and Hudson Hutcheson; brothers, Hollis Cain and wife, Ona, and Lex Cain and wife, Ruby; sister, Vaudie Mitchell; sisters-in-law, Martha Cain and Laverne Cain; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010 at First Baptist Church of Phil Campbell. Spry Memorial Chapel assisted the family.
Pallbearers included nephews, Steve Cain, Wayne Enlow, and Edwin Mitchell, as well as Matt Hutcheson, Larry Nix, and Don Ezzell. Deacons of the First Baptist Church served as honorary pallbearers. Officiating ministers were Bro. Tim Haney, pastor, Dr. Scott Moore, and Bro. Jerry Hester. Music was provided by Jackie Ergle, soloist, and Karen Townsend, pianist. Burial was at the Phil Campbell Cemetery.
