Lions hosting Henderson State

The third-ranked University of North Alabama football team opens its 2010 season at home tonight against Henderson State.

The Lions are favored to win the Gulf South Conference championship this season and will get their first taste of GSC competition even though the game will not count towards league standings.

UNA has dominated the series over the years, winning 19 of 23 meetings between the programs including the last four contests.

Henderson State enters the contest with a 1-0 record after defeating Southeastern Oklahoma 44-13 last week.

The Lions have played well in season opening games recently. Their last lost was a double-overtime defeat at Samford in 2002.

Like last season the biggest question for UNA is how well it will be able to replace several starters. Last year coach Terry Bowden relied on transfers to fill the holes and has done the same this year.

Of the 111 players on the Lions’ roster, 58 have transferred to UNA with 24 of those players coming from Division-I programs.
