Handy Fest event planned for Roxy

The annual W.C. Handy week will soon kickoff in Florence, but why head north when you can be entertained right here in Russellville?

The Franklin County Arts and Humanities Council is sponsoring the annual “Evening at the Roxy” during the week of the W. C. Handy Festival. This is the 10th year for the Arts Council to host this event at the Roxy.

Entertainment will be presented by local talent featured as “The Great Pretenders” on Thursday, July 29 at 7 p.m.

The following are just some of the entertainers scheduled to imitate and perform: Kathy Ivy – Patsy Cline; Jacob Green-John Connelly; Lacy Snider – Dolly Parton; Buford Parker – Ray Price; Jayne Wells – Wanda Jackson; Chase Holland – Elvis; Sherene Wade – Trisha Yearwood; Bert Fowler – John Denver; Emma McDowell – Crystal Gayle; Ethan Pharr -Gospel; Lucas Sheppard – Conway Twitty; Aaron Freeman; Lydia Wade – “Belle” from Beauty and the Beast; and many more talented entertainers.

Each year the W. C. Handy Festival grows larger.  It brings people from all over the state as well as from other states to northwest Alabama. This event promotes the tourism in our area and helps our economy.  Several local businesses, industries, and individuals support this program.

They will be acknowledged in the official W. C. Handy brochure and on its Website as well as at the Roxy show.

Bob Stickley, who will be impersonating George Strait, said there are a number of acts in the show that will surprise you.

“There are many talented people planning to entertain on stage at the Roxy,” he said. “Kathy Ivy from Red Bay will be performing and she has opened for Gene Watson, Ronnie McDowell, John Connelly, George Strait and the country group Alabama. She has a wonderful voice.

“Another very talented singer performing is Lacey Snyder from Rogersville. She has her own T.V. show daily in Nashville and has opened for Razzy Baily. This is a show you won’t want to miss.”

The Arts Council takes pride in the restoration of the historic Roxy Theatre.  The Council appreciates Sen. Roger Bedford for getting grants for the Roxy and to the community for its continued support. The Arts Council wants to present quality, wholesome programs that the entire family can enjoy.  This will be an entertaining evening that you will not want to miss.

Admission is $5 and children under the age of six are free.

All proceeds go to the historic Roxy Theatre.  Tickets will be sold at the door.
