Movie store opens in spite of economy

Where one door closes, another opens.

With Movie Gallery closing shop and shipping out of Russellville on Friday, Sight and Sound Video hopes to pick up customers and offer an alternative to those who don’t want to face the dollar movie vending machines.

The new walk-in movie store is located on U.S. 43 in the shopping center beside Guthrie’s.

Leon Crittenden, who owns the new movie store, opened on June 1 and also has a store in Haleyville.

Employee Skyler South said he heard that the folks from Movie Gallery were sending consumers their way.

“We are picking up pretty quick,” he said. “I’m happy we can give the people the option to walk into a store and choose which movie they want, instead of standing in a long line at Red Box just to be rushed to pick a movie when you get to the actual machine.”

South said with competitive prices, convenience and having a variety of movies available should bring in business.

“If you choose to get your movies On Demand it can turn out to be pretty expensive,” he said. “I’ve also heard people complaining about the movie selection the Red Box offers. I hate to hear they used Red Box first, but we are getting the business and that works for me. We get the new releases on time and we just have a big selection, so I don’t think we have anything to worry about.”

South said the busiest days in the movie business are Tuesdays and the weekends.

“The reason Tuesdays are so busy is because that is the day when all the new releases become available,” he said. “And obviously the weekends are busy because lots of people like to hang out at home and have a movie night.”

The movie store also has games available for rent for all the gamers who wish to try before they buy.

Sight and Sound Video hours are Monday-Thursday from 11 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
