Devaney sees big numbers in her future

Editor’s Note: Franklin’s Future is a regular feature spotlighting a high school senior in Franklin County and what they have planned for life after graduation

Statistics show the majority of high school students tend to stray away from anything having to do with mathematics, but according to recent Belgreen High School graduate Anna Devaney, math comes easy.

Anna Devaney

Devaney, 18, said math was her favorite subject while attending Belgreen and since her recent departure, along with her class of 2010 classmates, she believes it will come in handy as she skips the junior college level and heads right into the business/accounting department at the University of North Alabama.

“I like numbers,” she said. “My mom works at a bank and I was an active member in the FBLA club so I believe those are some of the things that pushed me towards the business and accounting field of study.”

In grade school, Devaney transferred from Tharptown to Belgreen to attend first grade becasue of her mom wanting to live in the house she grew up in, which is located in Belgreen.

Devaney said she enjoyed her years at Belgreen and will miss the friends she has made while attending the school for the most part, but if she could change one thing about the school “it would definitely have to be the no gum rule.”

Devaney said she is happy she graduated and is ready to “move on and get out of the house.”

Once she begins her journey north to attend UNA, Devaney said she plans to move out from under the supervision of her parents and into her grandparents house in Muscle Shoals, which she believes will save her loads of money while she attends college.

Devaney said she wouldn’t mind getting into the married life once she is done with college, but says she believes she will take a different approach when it comes to kids.

“One day I hope to get a really good job at a large firm, then get married,” she said. “Once settled, I’m not so sure I would want to have kids, but I really like the idea of adoption instead.”

Being an entrepreneur is not one of Devaney’s goals because she believes it will be too tough to start from scratch.

“I have thought about opening up an accounting business of my own once out of college, but honestly I think it would be way to difficult for me,” she said.

Devaney admits to like living in Belgreen, but says she would just rather move closer to everything.

“I believe I would probably end up trying to get my own place in Muscle Shoals once I get out of college,” she said. “I’m not like a big time city girl, but I do want to be close to things and do not want it to take 30 minutes for me to get to Wal-Mart if I have to go.”

Devaney said sports could potentially be a part of her future at UNA, but believes it will probably have to be the intramural ones because of work.

“I’ve been thinking about going and trying out for the basketball team, but I plan on working while I’m in school and I just don’t know if I can juggle my studies, work and basketball all at the same time.”

Devaney’s perfect day would include playing basketball in the early part of the day, grabbing some lunch at Speedy Pig, then having a night out with the girls consisting of shopping and bowling.

Words that immediately pop into Devaney’s friend’s heads to describe her include goofy, dependable, trustworthy, loyal, pretty and classy.

Instead of picking one destination she would like to visit in the future, Devaney said she would just like to travel in general.

“I want to go and see different cultures and how they function,” she said. “I’d also maybe like to see the rainforest too.”

Summer has hit hard and seems to be fading quickly, which also means the college year will seem to come even quicker and that means Devaney will be stepping foot on the UNA campus as an official freshmen in college.
