It took a little while for the offense to get going, but when it did Phil Campbell pulled away for a 5-1 victory against area foe Red Bay to claim the 2010 Franklin County Varsity Baseball Tournament title.

It is the 14th consecutive year the Bobcats have won the tournament.

“It’s tough every year,” said Phil Campbell coach Alfie Welborn. “When we had the hit-and-run on we got a couple of hits and defensively we were able to turn a couple of double plays.”

Phil Campbell reached the finals after Belgreen forfeited in the semifinals.

Through the first three innings, the Bobcats stranded five runners in scoring position.

They finally broke through in the fourth as Jordan Benford, Cameron Harris, Ben Stancil and Austin Jones all scored. Phil Campbell added another run in the fifth as Harris scored his second run of the game.

Red Bay, which also stranded five runners in scoring position, got on the scoreboard in the seventh when Zach Hubbard scored.

Dillan Hamby picked up the win for Phil Campbell while Bailey Welborn came on in relief.

Austin Malone took the loss for Red Bay.
