Our View – Season of Giving

Christmas is a season of giving, and Southerners are generally considered giving people.
Studies have shown that residents of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and other Deep South states give a higher percentage of their total income to charitable causes than their counterparts in states elsewhere in America.
That's a badge of honor, folks. Life isn't about gathering as much to ourselves as possible, despite the messages purveyed in our world today.
The old adage, "'Tis better to give than to receive," can't be fully understood until you give to someone less fortunate than you and feel the satisfaction such actions bring.
This time of year, giving is even more important. Most of us are incredibly blessed to be able to buy gifts for family members, most of whom are hard to buy for to start with because they have all they need and more. We come together as families and exchange numerous gifts, wallowing in a cornucopia of blessings. Others aren't so fortunate. There are children all over Franklin County who won't wake up to much on Christmas morning, but we can help.
There are many worthy organizations that help those in need all through the year, but particularly around the holidays. Project Help, for one, located in downtown Russellville. Faith Mission Outreach for another, also located in Russellville. Both of these organizations help people right here in Franklin County. Also, the Department of Human Resources can put you in contact with other organizations that help needy children. The Salvation Army's Angel Tree, usually located in Regency Square Mall in Florence, is another good choice for holiday giving. Through the angel tree, you can select a needy child and purchase things from a "wish list" to enable that child to have a good Christmas.
Opportunities for giving are everywhere. Let's live up to our reputations as Alabamians and Southerners and give this Christmas season. You won't regret it, we promise.
