The Russellville city school board has a new vice-president.
Board member Steve DeFoor was unanimously chosen to fill the vacated seat left open when former member Mollie Hamilton stepped down last month after serving 21 years on the school board.
DeFoor is manager of the Russellville Electric Department. He jokingly said that he hopes board president, Dr. Tim Bishop, stays healthy so that he will not have to fill his shoes.
The board also voted to allow Russellville High School students to take part in some upcoming field trips. The RHS show choir will perform at the Alabama Association of School Board's annual convention at the Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham on Dec. 2-3.
The board also approved a trip for the RHS majorettes to attend the Ice Sculpture Show in Nashville, Tenn., on Dec. 17-18.
In other action, the board voted to allow the Potpourri Study Club to hold their annual Breakfast with Santa at West Elementary on Dec. 4.
In further action, a resolution was passed that opposes a uniform school calendar or mandatory start date. The resolution is supported by the Alabama Association of School Boards.
Ray said that some of the proposed measures concerning a mandatory schedule are being done so that some south Alabama areas can have students available to work for less pay at certain times of the year.
