Making the final cut

Friday will mark the end of an era for many Franklin County residents.
After 42 years of cutting, styling and fixing hair for several generations of local families, Marie Hargett will be putting her scissors in the drawer one last time Friday afternoon.
Hargett has either worked for or owned Modern Beauty Salon since finishing Augusta (Ga.) Beauty College when she was 19 years old.
Hargett said that hairdressing is like the rest of the world in the fact that it has changed quite a bit in 40 years. Hairstyles change with the times, and with it, so do hair dressers.
Hargett said that the personal interactions with her customers is what she will miss the most.
Although Hargett won't be around the beauty shop on a regular business anymore, it won't be hard to find her.
A cancer survivor, Hargett stays busy working with the Look Good Feel Better program with the American Cancer Society, providing wigs for patients who have lost hair due chemotherapy treatments. She is also the chairperson for the Franklin County Operation Santa Claus program that provides Christmas gifts for patients at Bryce Hospital in Tuscaloosa.
Because she has been so giving to others throughout the years, there will be a retirement party in her honor Nov. 21 at 2-3:30 p.m. at Modern Beauty Salon in the Franklin Shopping Center in Russellville.
Hargett's sister and co-worker of 35 years, Jayne Wells, wrote a poem that sums up her feelings.
For she thinks now it's time to rest, so y'all come by and wish her the best."
