Excellence in Education

Meridian Community College students Sarah Anderson, Marquita Johnson and Matthew Prater will receive the Dorothy McCauley Bates Memorial scholarships.
These $1,000 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by George Wade Bates of Birmingham. Bates is a 1948 graduate of MCC.
Anderson is a 2002 graduate of West Lauderdale High School. She is a member of the campus Wesley Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. She is studying pre-med and plans on attending medical school. She would like to work in the public health field and help inner city children.
Johnson of DeKalb is a 2001 honor graduate of Neshoba Central High School. A dean's list student, she is a sophomore in the University Transfer Program studying pre-med. Johnson plans to pursue a degree in biology and then attend medical school. She would like to specialize in the field of pediatrics.
Prater is a 2003 graduate of West Lauderdale High School. He is a member of numerous equestrian associations. He was named to the U.S. Achievement Academy and to Who's Who Among American High School Students. He is in the University Transfer Program with plans to study pre-med and than attend medical school.
Heather Lynn Cottles will receive the Darlene Withers Radiologic Technology Scholarship at MCC. Kim Monroe, who received her radiology training from Withers, funds this $1,000 award through the MCC Foundation. Withers retired in 1999 after teaching for 23 years at MCC.
Cottles, a 1993 graduate of Meridian High School, is a sophomore in the Radiologic Technology program. A dean's list scholar, she is a member of the Health Occupations Students of America.
She is the mother of two children and works part-time at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in the Radiology Department. She would like to pursue a specialized training in the field after graduation from MCC.
Christopher James Moffett will receive the Toxey Haas Mossy Oak Scholarship for the spring semester at MCC. This $600 award is funded through the MCC Foundation.
Moffett is a sophomore in the University Transfer Program. He was a five-year letterman in baseball at Clarkdale Attendance Center and was named All-State his senior year.
He was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students. He is a member of the MCC Baseball team and hopes to continue playing at the next level. He plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy.
