Newly-appointed Meridian Fire Chief Tim Miller said his first few days on the job have been a learning experience.
Miller, who has been with the department for 22 years, was chosen by Mayor John Robert Smith nearly two weeks ago to replace H.C. "Bunky" Partridge. Partridge retired Nov. 1 after 30 years with the Meridian Fire Department and will head of the city's training center and Department of Homeland of Security.
Smith chose Miller over four other MFD candidates for the chief's job.
The Meridian City Council confirmed the mayor's appointment of Miller on Nov. 4. after one city councilman openly criticized the appointment.
Ward 4 Councilman Jesse Palmer Sr., said he was not pleased with the selection process.
Palmer said while he believed Miller could do the job, he thought battalion chief Anthony Clayton, the only black candidate for the job, was more qualified.
Miller said he was caught off guard by Palmer's comments.
