BCC gets new way to stay green

This is not your father's irrigation system.
Briarwood Country Club is enjoying the fruits of a new double-row sprinkler system that runs the length of the golf course. The new system, installed last fall, replaced a 30-year-old single-row system that struggled to quench the thirst of the 6,500-yard, par 72 course.
In addition, the new system is operated by computer, which allows Briarwood workers to water the entire course or an area of just a few square feet.
The irrigation system is just one part of a series of renovations undertaken by Briarwood, membership at which is now over 500. The cart paths have been replaced, new tee boxes and practice tees have been installed, and the clubhouse has been expanded.
Moore said the club has also made direct changes to the course itself. Two bunkers have been sodded, a new bunker was built on the No. 10 hole, and a section of trees was cleared. Construction of two new bridges is also in the works, Moore said.
The sprinkler system alone cost about $300,000. In all, the golf course improvements have totaled roughly $600,000.
