Phil Campbell establishes new Civitan Chapter

A new Civitan Chapter has been established in Phil Campbell. The new chapter held their first meeting Dec. 4.
The newly formed Civitan chapter has 41 members, who will meet twice a month at the Community Center, Brenda Bray, member, said.
The officers are Jerry Bray, president; Philip Vinson, president-elect; May King, secretary, Terrell Potter, treasurer; Eddy Barton, director; Charles P. Taylor Sr., director; Jerry Mays, director; Ann Bragwell, director; Sammy Taylor, chaplin, and Merrell Potter, sargentant at arms.
The group plans to meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month, and membership dues are $20 per quarter. The next meeting is Monday, Dec. 11, Bray said.
Phil Campbell is not the only new Civitan chapter. Bear Creek also formed a new chapter this past August.
Civitan International began in 1917 with ordinary men who wished to make the world a better place. Civitan is coined from the Latin word civitas, which loosely means citizenship, and their motto was "builders of good citizenship," according to Civitan International's website.
According to the website, Thomas Edison, President John F. Kennedy, Bobby Eakes, Richard Petty, Bo Jackson, and US Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black were all affiliated with Civitan International at some point in their lives.
