Giving is a prominent theme through out this time of year. However, as Americans reach into their pockets to make donations, one organization is asking local shoppers to roll up their sleeves.
The Russellville Fire Department is sponsoring a blood drive for the American Red Cross Dec. 12 from 1 to 6 p.m.
Katy Akins, Communications Specialist for the American Red Cross Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Region, said their "Winter Days of Giving" drive – set to last from December through January – will help strengthen the blood supply during often low donation months.
"The holiday season is usually a challenging time for blood collection," she said. "The blood supply often dips to dangerously low levels during this time of year."
The Russellville drive will be held in the City Hall Auditorium and all donors will receive a t-shirt, coupons to Chick-Fil-A and Pizza Hut and will be entered into a statewide drawing for a Holland America Cruise for two and two round trip airline tickets.
All donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in generally good health and bring a valid form of identification.
