Church of the Mediator shares new playground with neighborhood

The Church of the Mediator will dedicate its new playground during a neighborhood cookout on Sept. 26.
The playground, which cost about $24,000, was built with money raised through church fund-raisers and some that was borrowed from the church diocese.
The Rev. Mike Dobrosky, rector of the church, said the playground was built not only for the children who go to church at the Mediator, but for all children in the community. He said the neighborhood playground affirms that the church is bigger than just its membership.
Steve Owen, chairman of the church playground committee, said the playground is not unlike a public park.
Owen said the church has already had some recreational interaction with its neighbors because area youth use the basketball goals around the parking lot.
The new playground, which features two slides, a small climbing wall, monkey bars and other features, is designed for children up to 10-12 years old.
Owen said plans are in place for additional items that will appeal to all ages.
People who live near the church will probably be notified this weekend about the cookout, playground blessing and dedication to be held next week. Young people in the Mediator's Sunday school classes are scheduled to distribute door-hangers as well.
