Kemper County economic development officials announced today that a Georgia company plans to open a plant that will manufacture fenders for tractor-trailers and employ about 50 people.
Mike McGrevey, executive director of the Kemper County Economic Development Authority, said Trans Technologies Co. of Acworth, Ga., plans to build a plant in Kemper County within the next 12 to 18 months.
Officials hope the new jobs will help reduce Kemper County's high unemployment rate, which is one of the highest in the state.
Kemper County's unemployment rate was 12.6 percent for April, the latest available figures. Lauderdale County's rate for April was 6.1 percent, while the statewide rate was 6.4 percent.
McGrevey and other Kemper County economic development officials announced the new industry at a news conference today at Howard Johnson's in Meridian.
The group also watched a promotional video and saw a semitrailer made by Trans Technologies. Company representatives were also on hand to talk about their products.
