Rush Foundation Hospital will host "National Wear Red Day" on Friday part of a nationwide campaign to increase awareness about heart disease.
The goal of the campaign is to inform people that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States. It is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
Dr. Dan Van Cleve, a cardiovascular surgeon at the Rush Heart Institute, said some women are unaware.
A group of national local partners, including the city of Meridian, have proclaimed the first Friday of February, which is American Heart Month, as the first annual National Wear Red Day.
The Heart Truth, a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease, is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Also in partnership with the campaign are the Office on Women's Health, DHHS; the American Heart Association; WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease; and other groups committed to the health and well-being of women.
