Roberts hits MBA Strike Jackpot

By By Mike Carson / bowling columnist
Jan. 27, 2004
For nearly a year the MBA Strike Jackpot has been unbroken and continued to grow, at least until Wednesday night that is. With the jackpot sitting at a hefty $1450, Sam Roberts became the first person to break the bank since last spring, walking away with a heavy wallet and a big smile. Since the last time the jackpot was won, several people have come within a strike of collecting. Then, along came Sam, who was not to be denied. Congratulations, Sam. Now about that steak dinner …
Want to talk about the most unusual 300 you have ever heard of? Well, we are going to anyway. Yesterday, the Industrial Electric team in the Bowlerettes league found a way to reach the magic number without even throwing a single ball. With Janice Kasper celebrating her 65th birthday, the combined age of Janice (65), Mary Copeland (67), Vic Love (90) and Ruth Hoy (78) is now sitting at a perfect 300. The unusual feat will only last for a short time, however, because Mary has a birthday coming up in a couple of weeks. So, tell me. How does your team rank? It would be interesting to know who has the oldest 4-person and 5-person teams. If you want to submit your team, let me know. (I think you know where you can reach me). Can any other team claim this title of "The Perfect Team?" Let me hear from you and maybe your team can make news.
Speaking of making news, Mike Cothern is doing his part. After a brief dry spell and getting tired of not seeing his name in this article, Mike decided to take matters into his own hands by firing three of the five 700 Series thrown last week. With a 704 on Friday, a 724 on Monday and a 707 on Wednesday, the newlywed increased his house leading total to 20. But Mike doesn't get all the headlines. Bill Fike had the high series for the week with a 750 while Steve Eastman checked in with a 718. The high game of the week was claimed by Robby Relinski who cranked out a 274 in the Queen City league.
Matar McClinton took both the ladies' high game and high series for the week with a 235/594 in the Monday Nighters league. Denise Rutledge laid claim to a 226 game to round out the high scores for the gals.
Don't forget to get your entry forms in for the Mens and Ladies City Tournaments. Reserved entries for the men close this Saturday while the ladies deadline is next week (Friday, Feb. 6).
Remember, if you bowl in an all-women or all-men league, your team entry fee is paid by your sponsor fee so all you have to do is decide on a date and time and fill out the form. Let's get together and make this year's City Championships the best ever.
Before I close, Bettye Simmons has asked me to express her heartfelt thanks and appreciation for all you thoughts and prayers following the recent stroke suffered by Abe. She wants everyone to know that Abe is back home and continues to make progress each day. I know you all will join me in wishing both Bettye and Abe continued success and a full recovery.
That's all for this week. Until next week … good luck and good bowling.
