Excellence in education

Two $400 scholarships sponsored by Riley Hospital Volunteer Services have been awarded to Becca Webb of Marion and Clara Smith of Jackson, both students at Meridian Community College.
Webb is a sophomore in the Physical Therapist Assistant Program and is a Dean's List scholar.
Smith is a student in the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
The 2001-2002 Rodney Walker Technology Scholar at Meridian Community College is Timothy Morgan of Meridian.
Morgan will receive a $1,250 scholarship funded by an endowment established by MCC trustee Tommy Dulaney in honor of his former teacher, Rodney Walker.
Morgan is a sophomore working on an associate degree in drafting and design technology.
LIVINGSTON, Ala. Kimberly Hibbler and Charita Hibbler, sisters from Noxubee County, are both students in the University of West Alabama Julia Tutwiler School of Education. The women will gain classroom experience this fall through student teaching in area schools.
Pam Harrison, Meridian Community College chief financial officer, has been chosen by the Community College Business Officers as the 2001 Outstanding Chief Business Officer for Region 9 which includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Chief business officers from 17 regions throughout the United States and Canada were honored. Selection is based on the officer's effectiveness in carrying out responsibilities, participation in institutional strategic planning, professional involvement in state and national associations and contributions to the community.
Harrison will receive the award at the Community College Business Officer's International Conference Nov. 10-13 in San Antonio.
A certified professional accountant, Harrison has served as president, vice president and secretary-treasurer of the Mississippi Community and Junior College Business Manager's Association.
She also is a member of several national organizations, including the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the National Association of College Food Services, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, College and University Personnel Association.
Harrison joined the MCC staff in May 1991 as the its financial aid director. In July 1993, she became business manager. She and her husband, Joel, have a 3-year-old son, Luke.
They are members of Midway Baptist Church, where Harrison is a Bible study teacher and a choir member. Harrison is a volunteer for Relay for Life and a charter member of the college's Lions Club.
Northwest Junior High School Students of the Month for September are: Erien Watson, Jessica Farrar, Amber Brown, Tiffany Dooley, Brandon Bennett and Andre Dillard.
Faye Gullette was named Teacher of the Month.
Students of the Month are selected by teachers based on citizenship and grades. Teachers of the Month are chosen by faculty members.
