RHS beats Ardmore, 42-7; improves to 3-0 in region

The Golden Tigers traveled to Ardmore on Friday and got a 42-7 region win with help from a stingy defense and big plays from the offense.

Russellville (3-2 overall, 3-0 region) had a 21-0 lead at halftime. Then the Golden Tigers equaled their first half point total in the second half.

Ardmore’s lone touchdown came during the fourth quarter.

The first RHS touchdown came with 5:41 remaining in the opening quarter when Tarus Davis scored on a 12-yard run. David Tomas added the first of his six extrapoint kicks of the game to make the score 7-0.

Russellville pushed the lead to 14-0 with the help of a 40-yard touchdown pass from Whit Goodwin to Ben Pounders on the final offensive play of the first quarter. The Golden Tigers used the air attack for another touchdown with 7:57 remaining in the second quarter when Goodwin threw to Bryson Cooper for a 65-yard touchdown.

Russellville’s first possession of the second half produced points when Goodwin passed to Connor Devaney for a 15-yard touchdown. The Russellville lead reached 35-0 when Goodwin used a short forward pass to Pounders, who then went to the end zone for a 56-yard touchdown play early in the fourth quarter.

Ardmore then used five consecutive rushing plays to put together its only scoring drive of the contest. The drive finished with a 25-yard TD run with 9:26 to go in the game.

Later in the fourth quarter, Russellville’s Darron Jones intercepted an Ardmore pass and returned it for a touchdown.

“I thought our kids showed up and played really hard,” head coach Dustin Goodwin said. “We definitely played cleaner on both sides of the ball, offensively in particular. The defense will be a little upset for giving up the one touchdown, but I thought they played really well all night, and we were solid in the kicking game.”

RHS will be in action again on Oct. 3 when the Golden Tigers travel to Fairview (5-0, 3-0) for a big Class 5A Region 7 game.
