Goggans signs cheer scholarship with UNA

RUSSELLVILLE Russellville High School graduate Ella Goggans will continue her cheerleading journey beyond high school, thanks to a scholarship from the University of North Alabama, Goggans began cheering for Russellville in seventh grade and has been involved in all-star competitive cheer since the fourth grade. She served as varsity cheer captain during her senior year.

“Cheerleading is the type of sport that helps you grow — not only physically, but also mentally,” Goggans said. “I think I am the person I am today because of cheerleading. Most people don’t see the hard work that goes into being the best athlete you can be.”

At UNA, Goggans plans to major in exercise science with the goal of eventually opening a cheer gym in Russellville.

“Russellville doesn’t have a lot of access to advanced tumbling, so I want to bring that here through my gym,” she explained.

“Cheerleading means so much to me. I love just getting the opportunity to meet new people and to challenge myself and put myself out there.”

Her RHS cheer coach, Kaylee Brannon, expressed pride in Goggans’ accomplishments and leadership.

“Ella has not only wowed us on the mat and on the sidelines, but has also inspired us with her dedication, her resilience and her ability to lift others up — literally and figuratively,” Brannon said.

“Whether it was hitting that stunt after those seemingly endless practices, or stepping up to mentor a younger teammate, Ella always showed us what it means to be all-in.”

Goggans credited Brannon’s support and guidance throughout her cheer career.

“Kaylee has always helped me grow as an athlete and a leader, and she really taught me how to lead a team,” Goggans said. “This past season, we were super close as a squad. I feel like my cocaptain and I did a good job of taking everyone’s ideas and creating different things together.”

Brannon emphasized that the scholarship reflects not only Goggans’ talent, but also her dedication and character.

“This scholarship represents years of grit, passion and persistence,” she said. “It’s not just a reward — it’s a responsibility.”

Although she admits feeling a little nervous, Goggans said she is eager for what lies ahead.

“I’m super excited to get out of my comfort zone, meet new people and find new opportunities in college.”

Brannon said the entire team is rooting for her.

“We’re proud of you,” she said. “You’ve made your mark here, and now it’s time to take that same fire to the next level.”
