Town picks Burks for Place 3 vacancy

PHIL CAMPBELL — The town council has named Billy Burks to fill the vacant Place 3 position.

The vacancy was created when former Place 3 Councilman Eddie Marbutt was appointed mayor April 17 after former Mayor Michael McQuary resigned.

McQuary resigned one day after the town’s April 15 meeting could not take place because of a lack of a quorum. McQuary and council members Phillip King (Place 5) and his brother, Barry King (Place 1) did not attend the meeting.

Town Clerk and Magistrate Virginia Burks said McQuary turned in his resignation on a piece of paper saying only that he resigned effectively immediately.

Councilman Barry King made the motion for Burks to fill the spot, and Councilman Phillip King seconded. The vote was unanimous.

Burks said he has lived in Phil Campbell off and on since 2002 and has lived in the city full-time for the last 14 to 15 years.

“I used to work part-time for the Police Department, and I’ve always been interested in the city council,” Burks said. “My wife owns Bobcat Babies here in town. I just wanted to be involved. I work for the sheriff’s office, so public safety is a huge thing for me. I’m an investigator now.”

Burks took his oath of office following the May 1 meeting.
