Phil Campbell sets scoring record, beats Red Bay

The Phil Campbell Bobcats set a school record for points scored in a game beating rival Red Bay, 64-22, in the final regular season game of the year.

Phil Campbell dominated the game on the ground amassing 503 yards and rushing on 34 carries.

Sophomore quarterback Hayston Scott led the ground game with 232 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns. Scott became the second Bobcat to eclipse the 1000-yard mark on the season. Scott also completed four of six passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.

Senior running back Hayden Wingo, who surpassed 1000 yards last week, continued to put up big numbers carrying the ball seven times for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

Chandler Benford and Logan Cooper also scored touchdowns on the ground for the Bobcats while Jayden Taylor caught a touchdown early in the second half.

Red Bay scored first on a 19-yard run to take an 8-0 lead.

Phil Campbell responded with a 35-yard run by Wingo to tie the game. Braxton Mayfield scored the two-point conversion run. It was Mayfield’s first game back after being injured earlier in the season.

Phil Campbell took the lead for good early in the second quarter on a 17-yard run by Benford. Wingo added a two-point run making the score 16-8.

Red Bay responded with a 12-yard run to cut the Bobcats’ lead to 16-14.

Scott punched the ball into the endzone from a yard out after a solid drive. Mayfield added a twopoint run to give Phil Campbell a 24-14 lead.

The Bobcats seemed to put the game away on a late second half score by Scott who sprinted 85 yards for a touchdown. Mayfield’s two-point run made the score 32-14.

Phil Campbell scored twice in the third quarter. Scott completed a 49-yard pass to Taylor to make the score 40-14 after a Benford two-point run. Wingo scored on an 85-yard run to make the score 48-14 after a Scott two-point pass to Hagen Raper.

The Bobcats scored twice more in the fourth quarter on a 47-yard run by Scott and a two-yard run by Cooper.

Red Bay added a late score. Mason Weeks led Phil Campbell’s defense with 22 tackles.

Red Bay travels to Southeastern for a first-round playoff game Friday night.
