Overton Farm looks to future as an educational facility

By Susie Hovater Malone

Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Upsilon’s November meeting focused on the future of Overton Farm as an educational facility. Sharon Hindman Hester, former Franklin County District Judge in the 34th Judicial Court and DKG Alpha Upsilon Honorary Member, presented the program.

Overton Farm, located in Hodges, was first established in 1817 by Abner and Judy Mae Overton. The family controlled the farm’s 160 acres until 1969, when the Tennessee Valley Authority purchased it and turned it into the Bear Creek Education Center, aimed at providing local children with a view of rural and farming life during the nineteenth century. Today, the property is undergoing conservation and restoration efforts.

John L. (Bo) Williams and Sharon Hindman Hester organized Past Times LLC for the purpose of rejuvenating the property known as “The Overton Farm” and using that property as an event venue. Past Times and others have partnered with Bear Creek to work diligently to get the property ready for public openings for various events.

This venue provides a serene, private setting for special events or to enjoy the beauty of Bear Creek. With its elegant gathering room, dressing and staging space, beautiful tree-covered grounds with creekside view and ample parking, this venue is perfect for weddings, business, civic gatherings, reunions or educational excursions. The dormitories are currently being restored, and the future of Overton Farm is encouraging with regards to returning to an educational facility.

DKG is an International Society whose members are outstanding Women Educators.  It has more than 100,000 members, including seventeen international countries, and the United States.

The November meeting was a celebration of our DKG sisters in Mexico. The purpose was to inform the members of current economic, social, political and educational issues in the world. Rebecca Massey gave a presentation on Mexico.  Several members brought Mexican inspired artwork and textile items for the display table. Rebecca Massey, Tommie Bragwell, Kristy Smith, Angie Garrison and Cheri McCain were the hostesses. The refreshments included wonderful Mexican cuisines and featured Mexican decorations.

The meeting took place at North Highlands Church of Christ. President Cheri McCain presided.   Cindy Bailey gave the inspiration and Brenda Oliver led the Pledge of Allegiance. Following the approval of minutes and treasurer’s report, McCain gave a report with important information and dates.

The meeting adjourned with the reading of the Beta State Collect.
