Phil Campbell boys fall to Belgreen

An explosive second quarter and lockdown defense led the Belgreen Bulldogs to an easy 59-33 win over the Phil Campbell Bobcats.

Phil Campbell led Belgreen 9-7 in the closing minute of the first quarter Saturday night. Belgreen guard Will Bonner found a slight opening in the Bobcats’ zone defense as time was about to expire, drove to the basket and laid the ball in with his left hand to tie the game 9-9.

That would be Phil Campbell’s last lead of the night.

Collin Bonner drove the baseline and hit a reverse layup while getting fouled in the process. After the ensuing free throw, the Bulldogs led 12-9.

Phil Campbell tried to push the ball up the court, but an errant pass was stolen by Will Bonner, who found his brother Collin on a no-look assist to take a 14-9 lead.

The Bonner brothers were not done. After two back-to-back backdoor assists from Will to Collin, Belgreen extended the lead to 22-11.

Will Bonner heaved a buzzer-beater shot from near mid-court to close out the first half and a 25-4 second quarter run by the Bulldogs, who led 34-13 at the half.

The Bobcats would never recover from the second quarter onslaught, as the Bulldogs extended their lead 50-23 at the end of the third quarter. A Will Bonner three with 5:54 to go in the game gave the Bulldogs a 30-point lead at 53-23.

Collin Bonner led Belgreen with 20 points, 11 of which came in the second quarter. Will Bonner added 16 points, and Austin James had 13 points. James went eight-for-eight from the free-throw line in the second half.

Adrian Reeves finished with six points, and Cole King added four points.

The Bobcats did not have a single player in double figures, with Cam Habada leading the way with six points. Sage Raper, Canaan Clay and Blain Goodson scored five points each. Quentin Hyde added four points. Bryant Hyde and Cole Pace scored three points each. Kyle Pace finished with two points.

    Belgreen 70, Tharptown 33

Belgreen easily beat the Tharptown Wildcats 70-33 this past week.

Belgreen led 19-10 at the end of the first quarter and 38-21 at halftime. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 64-29 by the end of the third quarter.

Will Bonner led the Bulldogs with 18 points – 11 in the second quarter. Hadden Taylor added 14 points, with 10 coming in the third quarter.  James scored all 13 of his points in the first half, making three three-pointers. Canaan Stough had 11 points. Cole King finished with five points, Carson Cox four points, Braycen Johnson two points and Adrian Reeves two points.

Dylan Valdez led Tharptown with 10 points. Jackson Clement added eight points, Edwin Vela seven points, Malachi Minor seven points and Tyler Amos one point.

    Belgreen 57, Vina 18

The Belgreen Bulldogs easily beat the Vina Red Devils 57-18, despite missing three starters with sickness.

Belgreen jumped out to a 19-6 first quarter lead and led 42-8 at halftime.

Cole King led Belgreen with 13 points. Jordan Wright followed with nine points. Alex Jarnigan and Reeves scored eight points each. Cox and Stough scored five points each. Brent Sykes added four points, Will King three points and Chris Naylor two points.

    GIRLS

    Belgreen 40, Vina 28

Noelle Willingham scored 17 points to help lead the Belgreen Bulldogs past the Vina Red Devils in a 40-28 area win this past week.

The game was tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The Belgreen girls put some space between them and the Red Devils in the second quarter to take an 18-13 lead at halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 31-19 by the end of the third quarter and cruised to the win.

Dacota Green followed Willingham with 10 points. Makena Fisher added five points, Isabella Tate had four points, Alayna Tate got two points, and Carson Hovater added two points.

Sara Scott led Vina with 11 points. Kaitlyn Athey added six points, Sara Harper four points, Keyara Umfress three points, Kaley Attaway two points and Abbie Petree one point.

    Tharptown 58, Belgreen 29

Gracie Montgomery and Sarah Mansell led the Tharptown Wildcats to an easy 58-29 win over the Belgreen Bulldogs.

Montgomery scored 19 points, and Mansell added 15 points, in the win.

Tharptown jumped out to a 16-11 first-quarter lead. Montgomery scored 10 of the Wildcats’ points in the first quarter.

The Wildcat girls extended their lead to 31-15 at halftime. Mansell scored seven of Tharptown’s second-quarter points.

The Wildcats pushed their lead to 45-24 by the end of the third quarter.

Savannah Romans added eight points for Tharptown, hitting a pair of second-half three-pointers. Autumn Montgomery scored seven points, Harleigh Borden five points and Amerie Villalobos two points.

Green led Belgreen with nine points, seven coming in the first quarter alone. Hovater added six points, Willingham five points, Alayna Tate five points, Isabella Tate two points and Fisher two points.

The Belgreen girls also fell to Phil Campbell 41-27 Saturday.
