Arbor Day celebration honors Barbara Weatherford Cashion
Community members from Red Bay and Vina packed Red Bay City Hall Sunday as the Red Bay Garden Club planted a tree in memory of Barbara Weatherford Cashion for Arbor Day.
The ceremony took place in city hall, with friends and family fondly remembering Cashion before planting the tree.
“Barbara Weatherford Cashion – we all know that is such a powerful name,” said Red Bay Mayor Charlene Fancher. “Powerful because of the many wonders done throughout her life, positively impacting so many lives and positively impacting our community.”
Cashion was a former Red Bay city clerk, teacher, mentor and business owner who impacted many lives in the City of Red Bay.
Friends of Cashion, including Katrine Moore, Johnny Mack Morrow and Joyce Davis, each spoke kind words remembering her life. Rosalyn Fabianke dedicated the tree, and Fancher, Scotty Kennedy and members of the Cashion family participated in the tree planting ceremony.
“She was such a dear friend, and we all remember her fondly,” Morrow said as he spoke about his childhood friend.
The tree will be planted at Red Bay High School with a marker dedicating it to Cashion. In addition to the main tree at the Arbor Day celebration, more than 1,000 trees were available for community members to take home and plant.
The City of Red Bay celebrates Arbor Day every year by planting a tree to continue to fulfill its requirements to be a Tree City U.S.A.
