Red Bay baseball season ends with sting of defeat

The Red Bay Tigers ran into a juggernaut in the third round of the state playoffs in Westbrook Christian. The Tigers lost game one 11-1 and game two 14-1.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow,” said Red Bay’s Coach Richard Maggerise. “These guys have been great, especially our seniors. They have overcome adversity and persevered this year. I hope the younger guys in our program have looked to their example.”

The Tigers finished the season with a 20-11 record. It was the first time since 1993 a Red Bay baseball team has advanced to the quarterfinals.

“This team accomplished something no Red Bay team has in a long time,” said Maggerise. “They can be proud and hold their heads high.”

The Tigers managed one hit in game one, a double by senior Kolby Bragwell, who is headed to Shelton State Community College to continue his baseball career.

Westbrook had 10 hits, including three doubles.

In game two, where Red Bay lost 14-1, Alex Burroughs, Cade McKinney and Peyton Green had the Tigers’ three hits. Kaleb Bragwell had the lone RBI, and Green had the lone Tiger run in the second inning.

Westbrook racked up 10 hits, including a homerun and three doubles.
