RBES students help foster children

Students at Red Bay Elementary School participated in the Pennies to Love drive during the month of September – and the top givers enjoyed some tasty treats for their generosity.

Assistant principal Leigh Burks said students brought pennies to raise money for Kids to Love, a non-profit organization committed to meeting the needs of foster children.

“The students at Red Bay knew their money was … for other children in our community and all around,” Burks said. “The students were so eager to bring their money each day.”

Students participated from Pre-K through sixth grade.

When the stakes got a little higher, the donations started to fly even faster, Burks added.

Shirley Ozbirn, manager at Jack’s, gave the students an incentive – a prize to the classes that raised the most money. “When she did this, the competition was on,” Burks said. “The classes in Pre-K through second and the classes from third grade through sixth were competing. The class that raised the most money would receive a milkshake and French fries from Jacks.”

Class winners at the end of the month were Jessica William’s Pre-K class and Jennifer Oliver’s fourth-grade class.

“Mrs. Shirley brought their milkshakes to them Oct. 12, and they were so tickled,” Burks said.

Since its inception in 2004, Kids to Love has served more than 215,000 children in foster care.  To learn more about Kids to Love programs and services, visit http://www.kidstolove.org.
