County teams fall in road clashes

By Bart Moss for the FCT

Red Bay, Tharptown and Vina all struggled on the road this week.

Red Bay lost to region leader Lamar County 21-12. Tharptown couldn’t contain Waterloo’s talented quarterback, losing 35-3. Vina lost on the road in Talladega to the Alabama School for the Deaf, 50-20.

Lamar County and Red Bay were scoreless through the first quarter of play. Lamar County broke the deadlock with an 80-yard run for a touchdown in the second quarter to give them a 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs scored again with 2:22 remaining in the half on a two-yard run to increase their lead to 14-0.

Red Bay answered Lamar County with a big play of their own when Aaron Lewey sprinted 71 yards to paydirt to pull the Tigers to 14-6.

The Bulldogs scored on a 36-yard run midway through the third quarter to increase their lead to 21-6.

Red Bay scored early in the fourth quarter on a 66-yard run by Max Bullen to pull the Tigers to 21-12. Red Bay, however, would not be able to threaten the Bulldogs again.

Lewey finished the game with 17 carries for 117 yard and a score. Bullen had 87 yards on eight carries and a score.

Meanwhile, in the northwestern tip of the state, the Tharptown Wildcats fell to the Waterloo Cougars 35-3. Waterloo scored 35 unanswered points on the arm of quarterback Bryce Palmer. Tharptown’s lone score came with 4:23 remaining in the game when Luis Macias split the uprights with a 42-yard field goal.

Vina traveled to Talladega to play the Alabama School for the Deaf. The Red Devils lost 50-20.

Red Bay will host Sheffield this week in a critical region game for the two teams. Tharptown will host Phillips Thursday night. Vina will travel to Shoals Christian.

Phil Campbell was off last week and will travel to Mars Hill Friday night.
