Celebrate RHS scholarship winners
Russellville High School will be having the annual seniors’ Honors Night tonight at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium, and the community is invited to come out and be a part of it.
Representatives from many universities and community colleges, such as the University of Alabama, Mississippi State University, Birmingham Southern University, Northwest Shoals Community College, University of North Alabama and more, will be presenting scholarships to graduating seniors. Several seniors will be receiving academic, athletic, performing arts, and foundation scholarships.
Four juniors were selected by the faculty to represent Russellville High School at the Alabama American Legion Boys’ and Girls’ State this summer – Layne Boyd, Nate Franklin, Charlie Gordon and Austin Stidham will be recognized at the Honors Night.
Eighty-nine seniors will be recognized for Academic Excellence. These students have maintained an overall A average for their four years at Russellville High School.
Twenty-three seniors will be awarded the Presidential Fitness Academic Awards. These are national awards that are presented to high school seniors who have an overall A average throughout high school in their academic classes and who scored in the top 20 percentile of all students who took the ACT test nationwide during this past year. The minimum composite ACT score to qualify this year was 25. The certificates are signed by President Barack Obama.
“There’s A Way” will be awarding several scholarships this year. “There’s A Way” also recognizes a teacher of the year.
The community of Russellville has always maintained a rich tradition for supporting the city school system. Local organizations and individuals provide additional scholarships for seniors graduating from Russellville High School, like the Russellville City Schools Education Foundation, Cattlemen’s Association, Helen Keller Hospital Auxiliary, Civitan Club, Kiwanis Club, and Rotary Club. Many scholarships are also given in honor of many special Russellville citizens, like the Bishop Family Community Service Scholarship, Bob Grissom Masonic Scholarship, Billy Bowling/First Metro Scholarship, Sylvia McCarver Memorial, Cecil Greenhill Memorial, June Mayfield Hester Class of ’64, Chucky Mullins Memorial, Curt Cody Thorne Memorial Football, Casey Stockton Memorial Scholarship, Walston & Jewel Hester Memorial, the B.E. Lee Memorial, Neil Taylor Sr. Honorary, Curtis Ikard Music Scholarship, Tina Green McNatt Memorial Scholarship, Thomas Harbin Memorial Scholarship, DHR James Gary Reed Memorial, Jane Shamblin Essay Scholarship, Rev. C.D. Hamilton Memorial, Dr. Wayne T. Ray Scholarship, Raymond Grissom Memorial Scholarship, Wells Samuel Scholarship, and Patti Kimbrough Scholarship, to name a few. All of the community and organizational scholarships mentioned are in addition to any other scholarships, grants or awards for which the candidate might be eligible.

The senior class of 2015 earned more than $1.5 million, with the community scholarships alone exceeding $60,000 of that amount.
