S.P.A.N. hosting Kruzin’ for Kids

The Franklin County S.P.A.N. (Special Program for Achievement Network) Program will once again host the Kruzin’ for Kids Motorcycle Ride to benefit local at-risk youth.

Remona Roberson, who is the program coordinator, said the event is always fun and this year won’t be any different.

“Along with the ride itself, we are having a 50/50 drawing as well as door prizes and T-shirts that will be given away,” she said.

“This will be a great event and it’s for a great cause.”

The 2014 Kruzin’ for Kids Motorcycle Ride will be Saturday, August 16, in conjunction with the Franklin County Watermelon Festival.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the S.P.A.N. Program building, located at 515 College Ave. in Russellville (the old College Avenue Elementary School). Registration is $25 single and $30 double. The registration fee includes a meal.

The last bike will be at 12:30 p.m. and the 50/50 drawing will be held at 1 p.m.

All proceeds from the ride will go to support some of the activities and other items the program needs to purchase throughout the year.

The S.P.A.N. Program of Franklin County provides comprehensive academic, social, behavioral, and basic employability skills training to the most high-risk youth in the local community, both male and female, ages 12 to 18.

“We use the money for things like supplies, but we also use the money to purchase items that will be an encouragement to the kids,” Roberson said.

“We do incentive trips sometimes and offer incentives for certain achievements, like passing the GED test the first time.”

Roberson said since the program was first started in 1999, they have served over 500 students with an 80 percent success rate of diverting those students from the juvenile court system.
