Forecasters predict wet, stormy Halloween

Meteorologists are predicting a wet and stormy Halloween – a fitting forecast for the spooky holiday but not so convenient for the scores of trick-or-treaters who typically line the streets of Franklin County each Oct. 31.

Meteorologist Stephen Latimer with the National Weather Service in Huntsville said Franklin County residents could expect a wet and windy forecast for most of the day Thursday.

Latimer said strong storms were also a possibility during the afternoon hours.

“Showers should start to move in during the early morning hours and continue through the day on Thursday,” Latimer said.

“The stronger storms are expected to move into the Northwest Alabama area between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

“The main threat with these storms will be gusty, damaging winds, but there is also the potential for spin-up tornados and straight line winds. This threat is low and will mainly be relevant during the afternoon and evening hours.”

Latimer said heavy rainfall was also predicted with 1-2 inches of rain expected with this storm system.

“It has been dry in the area for several day, so hopefully flash flooding won’t be a problem,” he said.

Latimer said a break in the storm system was expected about 9 p.m.

Franklin County will be under a wind advisory from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. Thursday.
