PC Civitans hosting Polar Bear Plunge

For the second year in a row, the Phil Campbell Civitans will hold a Polar Bear Plunge in an effort to raise money for scholarships for graduating seniors.
The plunge will take place at Mon Dye Boat Landing in Phil Campbell on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, at 2 p.m. The cost to participate in the plunge is $10, which includes a T-shirt.
During the event, participants will enter the water, despite cold temperatures, to raise money for the Phil Campbell Civitan organization, which recently took on the project of raising funds for a memorial park in the center of the downtown area that will pay tribute to those who lost their lives on April 27.
However, Civitan president Bruce Forman said that the money the organization raises from this year’s plunge will solely be used to provide scholarships to graduating Phil Campbell High School seniors.
“Our organization participates in many projects that benefit the community but we wanted the funds from this fundraiser to provide scholarships for our seniors so that they will have an incentive to go on to college and expand their education,” Forman said. “Investing in the future of your young people is something we really believe in.”
Forman added that last year’s Polar Bear Plunge was a memorable event and something he thinks the participants really enjoyed.
“We had about 40 to 50 people show up for last year’s event and about 17 people actually took the plunge,” he said. “Everybody had a blast and as soon as they were done, they started talking about the next year’s plunge.”
Forman said he checked the water temperature on Thursday and said it was right at 52 degrees.
“It won’t be as cold as last year, so we hope we have a lot of people show up to support this worthy cause.”
Anyone wishing to participate in the Polar Bear Plunge can contact Bruce Forman at 256-668-4617 to register.
Participants are also welcome to show up the day of the event.
