Convicted sex offender charged with failing to register

A Haleyville man has been arrested in Franklin County for failing to register as a sex offender.

George Aaron Speyer, 36, with a listed address of 624 5th Avenue, Haleyville, has been charged with failure to register as a sex offender, a Class C felony.

According to authorities, even though Speyer was registered as a sex offender in Winston County for his 1993 first-degree rape charge there, he admitted he had been living at a home on Bates Landing Road in Phil Campbell for the past week and had not reported this to local law enforcement.

Bates remains in custody at the Franklin County Jail without bond at this time.
