Russellville tops Lee for region title
HUNTSVILLE — Russellville claimed its first region title since 2006 with a 35-7 road win at Lee-Huntsville, but it was not as pretty as the final score indicated.
The Golden Tigers (7-1, 6-0) opened the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Devan Parker to Darrian Graham in the first quarter and extended their lead with a 5-yard run by Tevin Cross.
Lee put together a scoring drive in the closing minutes of the first half and cut Russellville’s lead to 14-7 at halftime with a touchdown pass at time expired.
Russellville took the opening drive of the second half into the red zone, but fumbled the ball away. The Golden Tigers did the same thing on their next drive.
The offense settled down and got an 8-yard touchdown run from Robert Terrell to pull ahead 21-7 by the end of the third quarter.
Parker broke loose on a 37-yard touchdown run in the fourth and Terrell recorded his second touchdown of the night with a 1-yard run to round out the scoring.
Brent Calloway saw limited action Friday, but the running game was still potent as Cross carried the ball 22 times for 151 yards — he had 105 yards by halftime – and Parker had 10 carries for 110 yards.
