Phil Campbell Elementary under heightened awareness status

PHIL CAMPBELL – The elementary school is under a heightened awareness status Wednesday morning after two students told teachers that there was a man dressed in all black with a gun on the campus, according to Police Chief Jessica Clemments.

“We have walked and searched the property and no one is around that shouldn’t be,” Clemments told the TimesDaily.

She said members of the police department will remain on campus and continue to patrol the area.

Heightened awareness means an unusual situation may exist, according to the Franklin County Schools Handbook. “Instruction will continue but the system/school will be instructed to report any suspicious or unusual activity.”

The elementary school posted a statement on its social media page saying that officials have “secured the perimeter.”

“Everything is safe and we are taking all precautions. No other actions are needed at this time,” the school stated.

Franklin County Superintendent Greg Hamilton told the TimesDaily that law enforcement remains on campus and are presently “reviewing camera footage to verify authenticity.”
