Red Bay’s Fabianke recognized by council
One local woman was recognized for her prestigious appointment to a state commission at Monday’s meeting of the Red Bay City Council.
Gov. Bob Riley has appointed Rosalyn Fabianke to the Governor’s Physical Fitness Commission, an affiliate of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
Fabianke will replace Sen. Hinton Mitchem as a representative of the Fourth Congressional District and will be one of only seven members of the commission statewide.
Alabama was the second state in the nation to establish a physical fitness commission and according to Fabianke, Alabama’s commission is one of the most active.
The main goal of the commission is to educate citizens on the value of regular exercise.
“Physical inactivity is a problem,” Fabianke said. “Americans can improve their quality of life just by exercising and that’s the message the commission wants to get out.”
The Governor’s Physical Fitness Commission partners with organizations such as the Alabama Special Olympics and the Senior Olympic State Games and works with events such as Employee Health and Fitness Day and Physical Fitness Month held in May.
“We have the opportunity to have a fit Alabama and the benefits will last a lifetime,” Fabianke said.
Red Bay Mayor Bobby Forsythe thanked Fabianke for her dedication and expressed his agreement with her appointment.
“We appreciate all the hard work Rosalyn does for our community and we are very proud of her appointment to this commission,” Forsythe said. “We know that she will do a great job and represent us well.”
Before the council meeting officially began Monday, State Sen. Roger Bedford, through the Franklin County Community Development Commission, awarded grants to the following organizations:
• $1,000 to the Red Bay News’ Newspapers in Education program
•$1,500 to the Red Bay High School science class
•$500 to the Russellville youth cheerleaders
•$1,250 to the Franklin County Career Technical Center
• $2,000 to the Red Bay High School Old Gym Lighting Project
• 1,000 to the Phil Campbell Youth Football League
• $1,000 to the Belgreen High School Envirothon team
• $1,000 to the Russellville City Schools Robotics team
• $1,000 to the Tharptown Neighborhood Watch
• $2,000 to the Imagination Library of Russellville
In other business, the council addressed the following items:
• Applications are available for a part-time dispatcher position with the Red Bay Police Department.
• An application for a HRAB grant for storing and preserving city maps and blueprints was approved.
• Park and Recreation Director Joey Allen was converted to a full-time employee.
• Donald Weatherford was appointed to fill a position on the Park and Recreation Board. The term expires March 18, 2011.
• A request by the youth cheerleaders to hold a roadblock on November 6 was approved.
• The Halloween Trick or Treat Night for Red Bay will be Saturday, Oct. 30.
